ReM(i)'s NAT, a Certified Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, is an easy to follow transitional tool kit that will get your clients unstuck emotionally and reengaged to move forward. The healthcare industry promotes person centered care, but without a trauma informed lens, and therapeutic comprehension of both the cognitive state and the triggers, this person-centered goal can elude us. Let's get to the root cause easily and swiftly with NAT.
At $175 an hour, this $350 package will make your job easier and help your clients feel better both in the present, and about their decision making in the future.
Why Two Hours of Non-Attachment Therapy before Downsizing
Our NAT Practitioners have done this for years as downsizing professionals and organizers. ReM(i) implemented Non-Attachment Therapy because we witnessed clients throwing out things they needed or wanted and having regrets.
Before ReM(i) Therapeutic techniques, clients would keep too much and then need to reengage in the organizing process, loosing both time and money, OR needing to re-organize again and again rather than making deep and meaningful lasting change.
Downsizing is an emotional process. ReM(i) has found that most people engage with both a therapist and a decluttering expert. By engaging in therapeutic questions as part of our process in supporting downsizing, having licensed therapists for support and supervision of our team, we streamline the process of decluttering and it’s emotional healing component. This therapeutic fusion allows clients to heal the emotion when it arises rather than holding onto it for a therapeutic session, saving time and money, and achieving their goal of downsizing.
The emotions of downsizing can be complex and overwhelming. The thought of letting go of treasured possessions or saying goodbye to a home filled with memories can evoke feelings of loss and sadness. It can feel like a chapter of life is closing, and there may be a sense of mourning for the past. Fear of the unknown comes with downsizing. Moving into a smaller space or transitioning into retirement can bring about anxiety about what the future holds.
Additionally, the process of downsizing may signal a new stage in life, such as becoming a senior or getting older, which can stir up emotions about aging and changes in physical abilities. All of these emotions are completely normal and understandable during the downsizing process. ReM(i)'s therapeutic team will help your clients to acknowledge these feelings, support them through this challenging time, and get the work done with you.
Change can be hard. Our neural pathways, patterns of being and thinking, our operational system itself supports, our prior way of being. ReM(i)'s Non-Attachment Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps clients to joyously distrust these old patterns and engage in new ones. Change is a simple fact of life that we all have engaged multiple times, whether its going off to college, moving in with a life-partner, starting a new job, or engaging in a creative process. The resilience skills, or ways of adapting that clients have used in the past, are the same skills needed for future transitions. Coming to terms with change can be congratulating oneself on past successes and saying "hey, let's do it again!".
Whether it's a career change, moving to a new city, or even just trying to break a bad habit, the process of change can feel incredibly daunting and overwhelming. ReM(i)'s NAT teaches clients how to allow these feelings to pass and to engage in the task at hand. Our brains are wired to resist change, which means that change will possibly feel uncomfortable. This is why clients will push back against the organizer or have negative feelings during the downsizing project. ReM(i) helps clients step outside of their comfort zones and face the unknown. Client's feelings of anxiety, stress, and sadness, which arise when we are confronted with significant change, are normative signs that something new is taking place. ReM(i) helps you to celebrate the newness with your clients and to spend more time in the joy than the discomfort.
Downsizing is truly one of the toughest changes that many aging adults face. Whether it's downsizing a home that they have lived in for decades, downsizing possessions, or even making Realistically M(i)nimal lifestyle changes, the process can be emotionally taxing and physically exhausting.
Downsizing often means letting go of sentimental items, adjusting to a smaller living space, and navigating the complex emotions that come with saying goodbye to the past. ReM(i) helps your clients capture the stories of the past and honor the experiences while letting go of the objects.
Those stories are meaningful and we do not need to hold the object to support the story's immortality. Despite the challenges that come with change, it's important to remember that growth often comes from embracing new experiences and pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones.
We are all growing at every stage of our lives and older-adulthood is no different. While change may be hard, it also has the potential to lead us towards personal development and self-discovery. ReM(i) helps you encourage your clients to re-discover themselves over 70 years of age, discover again after 80, and as we age over 100! People are living longer! We are receiving the gift of more time on this planet! Let's engage these years with meaning.
ReM(i) adapted the 30-stitch process from Stitches for Seniors into an evidenced based two-hour Non-Attachment Therapeutic Program.
Non-Attachment Therapy has received Continuing Education Units from the National Association of Social Workers and was researched at Columbia University School of Social Work.
These CEUs have been shared at prominent hospitals, healthcare systems, independent living, and retirement communities. In two, one-hour sessions ReM(i)'s NAT Practitioners will prepare your clients for the downsizing work ahead with you, for a smoother process and easier decision making in their daily lives.
“The emotional attachments to objects from our lives keep us stuck in the past.”
Refer to ReM(i) when your clients are having complex emotions during your work. Do they appear depressed or to be having a negative experience? Distracted? Are they always finding something else to do rather than the project at hand?
Does it feel like your clients are fighting the process? Is another family member pressuring your client to make decisions that they don't want to make? Many times interpersonal tensions are at the root of distress. We work with clients without and with cognitive impairment across the adult life span to attain affective well-being. Age is never a limit! It is a gift!
“The things you own, end up owning you.”
For the Boomer Generation and beyond, who did not grow up talking about their feelings, it may be easier to tell the history of an object rather than delve deep into an emotion. ReM(i)’s goal is to always make the process engaging and even fun! Should we say joyously disruptive?!
Our therapeutic system of non-attachment supports everyone from the Marie Kondo’s to the Brad Pitts. How did we get to Brad Pitt? Well the first rule of Fight Club is not to talk about Fight Club … and there were some other good quotes in that movie:

Avoid Re-traumatizing Our Older Adult Clients
It is extremely difficult for older adults to adjust to a new environment without proper preparation. ReM(i) starts the transitional process early with Non-Attachment Therapy (NAT) in the home via Telehealth. NAT can be engaged prior to consideration of a move or downsizing project. Engage a NAT Practitioner when your client is living in indecision.
Two one-hour sessions may be what your client needs to move them from contemplation to action. NAT is a fun way to begin the process of engaging in life as we age! We do not need all of our mid-life state objects for the later stages of our lives. The process of non-attachment can be engaged early as a fun process of gift-giving with family members.
If there is a lack of advance notice, or time, to emotionally and physically prepare for downsizing, feelings of fear and uncertainty can lead to anxiety and depression, especially for those dealing with health issues or cognitive decline. A sudden change can have significant negative impacts on client's overall well-being and can cause what is known as transfer trauma or relocation stress syndrome. Older adults who are forced to move due to circumstances beyond their control often have a harder time adjusting compared to those who make the decision themselves.
It is crucial for families and caregivers to recognize the challenges that come with late-life relocation and provide support during this difficult transition. By offering emotional support thought two one-hour NAT sessions, helping with logistics, and ensuring that the new environment meets their needs, you can help ease the transition for your aging loved one or client.
It is important to create a sense of familiarity in the new space by bringing along cherished belongings or incorporating familiar routines. With proper care and understanding, it is possible to help aging individuals turn this challenging period into a fresh start where they feel safe, comfortable, and supported in their new surroundings.
When it comes to helping clients cope with transfer trauma, it's important to consider certain factors that may put them at higher risk. Dr. Gary Small highlights the impact of pre-existing mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, which can be exacerbated by the disruption of a move.
Being prepared for the transition is crucial, as a lack of control over the decision-making process can heighten feelings of trauma and loss. Additionally, individuals with a history of prior losses or traumatic transitions may find it harder to cope with the challenges of relocation. It's essential for caregivers and family members to provide support and guidance during this time to help their loved ones navigate through the changes.
Ultimately, fostering open communication utilizing Non-Attachment Therapy with ReM(i) and providing reassurance that matches client's positive cognitions, to support the client with the autonomy necessary for long-term happiness.
NAT Practitioners expedite and relieve the stresses of working with a downsizing professional. NAT can also invigorate decision making skills and re-empower older adults to engage in their life. Aging is fraught with decisions whether it be housing, medical or family. Clients who engage in NAT find that other decisions come easier after the two one-hour sessions. Clients also report that NAT is more effective and more fun than ongoing therapy because it engages the transitional skills that older adults are looking for. NAT helps client reach their emotions without re-traumatizing themselves in historical psychotherapy. Help your clients have fun! Share their stories while learning new therapeutic skills and taking action on the downsizing work that was originally the end goal! Soon your clients will exclaim "I did it!
